Where the Castle of Parga stands

The Castle of Parga occupies a rocky peninsula between the harbour entrance and Valtos beach, with the old town spread below its walls. Its position makes the fortress part of the town’s seafront landscape as well as a historic site.

Parga became a Venetian possession in 1401, after its inhabitants signed a treaty with Venice. The castle was destroyed by the Ottoman fleet in 1537 and rebuilt by the Venetians in 1567. After it was destroyed again in 1571, it was restored and expanded. Much of the form seen today is Venetian and dates from after 1571.

For a route that links the waterfront with the lanes of Parga’s waterfront and old town, the castle fits naturally into a walk through the centre.

How do you walk up to the castle?

How do you walk up to the castle?

The approach is uphill: a path climbs to the entrance on the southeastern side of the fortification. Inside, narrow paths follow the natural incline of the hill and lead onward to the citadel, so expect a rising and uneven route rather than a level circuit.

From a two-star hotel in central Parga, the castle is about a 12-minute walk. The walk links the central streets with the elevated site; the final approach is the uphill section.

What can you see inside the site?

What can you see inside the site?

The castle grounds contain fortification walls, gates and bastions, along with barracks, settlement ruins and remains of nine churches. The surviving structures trace the site’s military and civic history across several periods.

Look above the entrance arch for an inscription bearing the year 1707 and the name of Parga’s governor, Markos Theotokis. Above the second gate is a relief of Venice’s winged Lion of Saint Mark. The citadel gate carries inscriptions with the year 1820 and the name of Ali Pasha.

Ali Pasha added an internal citadel in 1819–1820. Its complex included residential areas, cisterns, a small bath and a mosque.

Most residents left Parga shortly before the castle was handed to Ali Pasha in 1819, and the site was gradually abandoned in the second half of the 19th century. The castle interior also has an art and history exhibition space.

Where do the views look out?

Where do the views look out?

The castle’s position above the harbour entrance and Valtos beach gives it outlooks over both the town’s waterfront and the bay. As you follow the paths up the slope toward the citadel, the elevated setting puts Parga’s harbour and coastline below the fortifications.

When is the castle open, and what should you check?

Visit Greece gives free entry and daily hours of 08:00–20:00 from 1 April through 31 October. Opening schedules can be time-sensitive, so check the official site before you go.

Access is on foot, and the approach path climbs to the entrance. If you are planning a longer walk around the centre, the castle’s position above the harbour makes it easy to combine with the waterfront and old town.
